Policy paper “What Nineveh’s Municipal Council Reveals about the Iran-Turkey Power Struggle in Iraq” for the Fikra Forum platform
Date of publication: November 26, 2024
On November 20, 2024, Filip Sommer, Director of the Prague Center for Middle East Relations (PCMR), published an article “What Nineveh’s Municipal Council Reveals about the Iran-Turkey Power Struggle in Iraq” for the Fikra Forum (an online platform affiliated with the Washington Institute for Near East Policy, WINEP) with his Iraqi colleague Rebar Rawf Salih.
The article discusses the current rivalry between Iran and Turkey over Iraq’s disputed territories (disputed internal boundaries). It focuses more specifically on Iraq’s Nineveh province and also mentions developments in provinces such as Kirkuk and Diyala. Within this province, Iranian influence has been growing considerably since the announcement of the results of the Iraqi provincial elections in December 2023, particularly at the cost of Turkey and its allies on the ground.
We wish you pleasant reading.
